One of the decisions you have to make when you find out that your partner has another partner is whether you want to forgive your partner and try to fix the relationship, or to break up with him/her.

And while you would rather hold on to someone you love, especially if he/she is very sorry and wants to make your relationship work, there are may people who argue that once a person cheats on you for the first time, he will do it again.

There are no hard and fast rules on relationships though. The decision to forgive your partner  and move on, or to break up with him/her depends on many things.

It depends on whether you are ready to let go of the relationship, what you will lose if you break up with your partner, whether you have the resources to take care of yourself and your children ( if you have any), among other things.

Here are some issues you need to think about:

• If you partner has/had another sexual partner, you  and your partner need to take an HIV test to make sure that you are free of the virus while you decide what to do about your relationship.
• You and your partner should use condoms during sex until you get your test results and you are certain that you are both free of HIV.
• If you are not sure that your partner has ended the relationship with his/her concurrent partner, you need to continue using condoms to protect yourself from possible HIV infection.
• Not using a condom during sex with your partner means that you trust him/her to be faithful to you and to remain free of  HIV infection. If you are not sure that your partner will not cheat on you again, then you are not ready to have sex with him/her without a condom.
• Do not let yourself to be put under pressure to stop using a condom. Having unprotected sex with someone who is part of a sexual network increases your risk of getting HIV.
