A new study has found that one in three Swazi girls has experienced some form of sexual violence before the age of 18, which often leads to serious social and health problems including HIV and unwanted pregnancies, reports PlusNews Global.
According to the article, which cites research by the UN Children’s Fund and the United States Centres for Disease Control, an estimated 22 percent of Swazi women aged between 15 and 24 are infected with HIV.
The article also suggests that sexual violence could be an important route of HIV transmission in high-prevalence countries like Swaziland.
