One-to-one relationships would leave women outside nature (SOWETAN)

kgosi-setlamorago-thobejane-chief-of-the-bapedi-ba-mmafefe-and-national-organiser-of-the-congress-of-traditional-leaders-contralesa Check out this article by Zinhle Mapumulo on polygamy.

The article is based on the speech by Kgosi Setlamorago Thobejane, Chief of the Bapedi ba Mmafefe and national organiser of the Congress of Traditional Leaders (Contralesa) at the community launch of the OneLove campaign.

The event took place in Soweto at the end of January.

Kgosi Thobejane said: “There is a contradiction between the OneLove campaign and polygamy. Yes, it would be ideal to have a world where men and women can have a one-to-one relationship. But we have more women than men and, if we tried that system, we would be leaving some women outside of nature.”

Kgosi Thobejane also said:

“People must practise safe sex whether in a polygamy marriage or not. If you decide to have children and are in a polygamy marriage, go for an HIV test and know your status. If you are negative keep it that way by remaining faithful to your partners.”

Talk about it

So what do you think? Is it true that there are more women than men in the world, and in South Africa in particular? If it is true, should women share a man as a sexual partner?

i do not think that there are more women than men, i just think it’s an excuse by some men not to be faithful. People should realise that everything starts with self, if you are not true to yourself, you can never be true to anyone else. Faithfulness is very important these days especially when you are in a relationship, because your action will impact on those around you.

What is the problem with this guy. If there are more women than men why are the men complaining not the women. Why would they(men) worry about “leaving them(women) outside nature” instead of worrying about infecting them with HIV and other diseases.

In my opinion, the guy is right because the scripture too confirmed it, it says “In the end time, seven women would sticks to one man saying, just let us be bearing ur Father’s name.” So what confirmation are we still looking elsewhere for? Men just need to be contented with what they have & be faithful to their partners because women of nowadays can go to any lent to fulfill thier heart’s desire over men. Thanks

@George B – whatever the scripture may have allowed ( NOT prescribed, by the way), do you think it would be wise for men to choose to have many wives in this age of HIV and AIDS? Even, as you say, women are emancipated and have the resources to fulfill their hearts’ desires with other men? ( the latter defeats the impression that there is a shortage, because if women can go elsewhere, clearly there are men. But I digress…)

Perhaps the issue is not about what our faith/culture/tradition allows us to do, but looking the potential consequences of choices we have and asking ourselves if this would be in our own best interests and the interests of those who love and have sworn to protect?
