There are three types of relationships that are important when looking at how HIV spreads:
-
A monogamous relationship
This is when you only have one sexual relationship at a time. You don’t have sex with anyone but your main partner.
This can help reduce your risk of getting and spreading sexually transmitted infections like HIV. Each person remains faithful to the other as long as they are in the relationship.
2. Serial monogamy
This is when you have one sexual partner at a time, but you move from one sexual partner to the next in a short space of time. Leave at least 3 months between sex partners.
3. Multiple and concurrent partnerships
People who have MCPs have sexual relationships with more than one person at the same time. It’s one of the reasons that HIV is still spreading so fast in our country.
Think about this:
Have you ever had a sexual relationship with more than one person at the same time? Can you remember if you ALWAYS used condoms when you had sex?
