During our research on multiple concurrent partnerships, a number of Mozambican women spoke about the advantages of having onelove.
Here are some of the reasons they gave:
1. You gain respect from the community
A girl from Pemba says: “When you have prestige among people, that is, you gain consideration , the person gets to know that this girl’s boyfriend is that one, if they see you in the street they pay attention to you, you remain with a good personality; it is one of the advantages, respect between both of you, and the disadvantages is that he is not considered and you may end up in disgrace because you keep that in your heart and one of these days you explode and that is all.”
A girl from Tete says: “Well, there are many advantages, firstly because men or people start respecting you and they give you value because when you respect yourself, your husband or boyfriend becomes proud of you as well.”
5. You face less risk of getting HIV
A girl from Manica says: “The advantage is more in the safety because the person avoids getting sexually transmitted diseases.“
3. You have peace of mind
A woman from Maputo says: “We do not have to tell lies to anybody or to invent stories, it is an advantage, the person is tranquil … he becomes safe. Regarding the disease, we cannot say that it is an advantage because we do not know if the other partner goes out with other ladies and if he fetches them or not, I may stay here taking care of myself while…..”
4. You have certainty in case of pregnancy or diseases
A girl from Beira says: “If you fall pregnant you would know who is the father of the child. And in the event that you get diseases, it is easy to know from whom you got it.”
5. You have time to take care of your children
A woman from Maputo says: “The person has got time to bring up his children, to live a ruled life, to make a home … the point is, a person with ten boyfriends no longer knows what she wants from life! She has to think in telling lies, when the person sits down, she says to herself: but where am I going? What do I want? Do I want to get married? Do I want to have children, the person knows that she is with João because she already has plans, she wants to flirt, she wants to get married, to have children, we will get old together, yes it is an advantage to live with that person.”
