Many times when we talk about inter-generational relationships and how to stop young people from having relationships with sugar daddies and sugar mammas, we focus on the actions of the young people.
Yet, they are not the only ones who bear responsibility for such relationships. The men and women who have relationships with these young people, as well as the parents of the young people, should also be held accountable for the situation.
During OneLove’s research on multiple concurrent partnerships, it emerged that, sometimes, parents do know what tir children are doing. They may choose to pretend not to see what is going on, because of the material benefit that the family gets from the relationship.
This is especially true if the older partner buys necessary things like food and clothing for the family, or pays school fees for their child.
The parents may also stay quiet because they are afraid of confronting their children. They may believe that their opposition will not be welcome.
They may even fear that the youngster will throw it in their faces that the reason he/she has to be in the trans-generational relationship is because his/her parents failed to adequately provide for her.
OneLove wants to emphasise that “it takes courage to protect the ones you love.”
Loving and protecting your child means :
- Teaching him/her about life and relationships, so that he/she has the tools to make healthier, smarter choices.
- Offering your child relationship advice when the need arises.
- Refusing the financial help of an adult if the price of your agreement ( either given or tacit) is a sexual relationship with your child.
- Offering constructive criticism to your child if he/she is tempted to accept an offer from a sugar daddy/sugar mummy.
- Teaching your child about HIV, and the risk that he/she faces if he/she engages in multiple concurrent partnerships.
- Giving your child hope that his/her can be improved materially without his/her having to engage in multiple concurrent partnerships.

I have seen many times how innocent young girls are being supported by their parents especially their mothers to have relationships with old and married men just for the financial support that they are getting.I think that in most cases that mother had been doing the same when she was young that`s why she sees nothing wrong in that.I am a mother of three beautiful girls, the eldest being twelve and I have started talking to her about relationships and men in general with the aim of educating her and my advice to her is that old and married men are taboo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
