During a discussion about sugar daddies on the OneLove Facebook page, one of the readers said: Sorry to rant here, but I’m a little tired of prevention seeing teenage girl’s willpower as the only defense against such structural factors such as unaffordable school fees, rising inequalities and the absence of social safety nets.
What’s the other option for the hypothetical girl in your example[who's sugar daddy pays for her school fees, buys her uniform, gives her an allowance enough to buy luxuries like a fancy phone]?
Put an end to her education and then what? Unskilled work? Early marriage? Are these really preferrable?
So, I ask you, what other options does a girl who depends on a sugar daddy for basic daily expenses have? And why is the sugar daddy option not a viable one, even though on the surface it seems to be the most attractive?

If Not A Sugar Daddy, What Other Choice Then?
Realistically, the girl has several options and choices to make.
1. if she is well informed of the risk of HIV infection she is putting herself in because of being involved with a sugar daddy who mostly likely may also have other sexual partners, she must find ways of making sure that she protect herself from getting infected. The sugar daddy may provide her with all her needs, but must HIV be part of those provisions?
2. One important message that we must all think about is, “if you cannot abstain, use a condom.” The message is realistic in that due to the many other structural issues like poverty, some people, especially young girls may find themselves vulnerable because of poverty. The sugar daddies take advantage of this situation to force them into unprotected sex. The girl child must therefore stand firm and protect herself if she finds herself caugt up in such a relationship. Or she must demand an HIV test with the sugar daddy if “he is the sole provider.” Though this may not be a popular option, but it will make her protected from HIV (only if the suggar daddy do not have other sexual partners) but not early pregnancy.
Above all, the girl child must be given practical information that will make her make the right choice for her life, and her future.
