As part of our series of articles to build strong relationships that last,. here is an article by Toby Spillman entitled 7 Solid Ways To Build Trust In A Relationship.
Do you think you should always be looking to spice things up in your relationship? Maybe not, as being predictable is more important in the long run. This list is guaranteed to build trust in a relationship.
So, first up as we already said you need predictability. Most people think you need to keep mixing things up to keep the romance alive. Of course surprise romantic gifts and dinner dates are welcome, but consistency will be more solid over the long term.
Trust in a relationship is built on daily reliability. Let’s face it, you like to know where your partner is and what they are doing.
Next, let your partner know what your needs are and find out their needs too. They shouldn’t have to guess. This works both ways, so it is not about being selfish.
Third, make sure that what you say is matched by your actions. The words coming out of your mouth should match your body language and actions. When you say things are okay but you are not smiling, your partner reads your face and doesn’t hear the words. Your partner has to trust your words so they need to match the message.
Fourth, sometimes you have to say “No.” You don’t have to say yes all the time when your partner asks for something. Your partner will not respect you if you do. Refusal to constantly comply builds trust, because your partner will know when you say “Yes” you mean it.
Fifth, you need believe in your partner on a fundamental level. You have to believe your partner can and will do what he/she says. If you don’t believe in your partner’s ability to do something then you will fail to win trust.
Whatever you do, don’t keep secrets. Secrets are poison in a relationship, so be honest and open. Secrets take up a lot of mental energy and this energy would be better put into strengthening bonds between you.
Finally, look for the good in the bad. Relationships will always go through bad patches, but don’t give up. Use them to learn from and help you in the future. Don’t be afraid of problems as they can naturally help you move forward. Some pain is inevitable but use it to strengthen and not break you.
