HIV lives in human blood, sexual juices like sperm and vaginal fluids as well as breast milk.
HIV is mostly passed from one person to another when you have sex with someone who has the virus without using a condom.

You can also pass HIV to your child if you are HIV positive.
Your baby is more likely to get HIV if you are sick with AIDS, or if you are infected / re-infected with HIV while you are pregnant.
You can also infect your baby with HIV through breast milk if you have the virus.
If you choose to breastfeed your baby, it is recommended that you give him/her only breast milk for 6 months. Only thereafter can you add solids.
A person who is infected with HIV is often described as being HIV-positive.
