The OneLove Campaign march held by student activists from the University of Venda and celebrities was well-supported, with more than 350 people attending the event, says Peter Mudimeli from the Soul City Institute.
Participants also politicians, district municipality management staff, public servants, academics, NGO’s members, students, faith organizations, media, business community, police and traffic officials and the community at large, he says.
The figure also excluded those people who decided to join the marchers along the way.
“The aim and objectives of the march were archived. The OneLove Campaign in South Africa created a solid partnership with major stakeholders in the region and a has laid the foundation to work with other NGOs working towards the same objectives to network and support each other’s events,” Mudimeli says.
Mudimeli notes that voluntary testing service was offered during the march.”The idea of bringing in actors such as Zuluboy and Mbali Mlotshwa, who played Zakes and Lulu on Soul City series 9 really boosted the vibe of the whole event, especially among the youth.”
Regional radio station Phalaphala FM & Univen radio also played an important role in advertising the event, he says.
The OneLove march was the brainchild of Esther Tubake Mphahlele, a student at the University of Venda. She planned the march on Women’s Day in an attempt to get people talking about the issues that drive multiple concurrent partnerships.
